Stefan Ryser, Ph.D.
Stefan Ryser joined Bear Stearns in April 2000 from International Biomedicine Management Partners, where he was co-founder and managing partner for the $70 million biotech venture fund, which is fully invested in 13 companies. From 1989 to 1997, Dr. Ryser held several positions at Hoffmann-La Roche, including three years in Roche's U.S. headquarters in New Jersey. There he served as Head of Research Staff and Scientific Advisor to Professor Drews, with whom he co-authored several watershed articles on productivity in the pharmaceutical industry, including:
1996: The first comprehensive analysis of the pharmaceutical industry's ability to turn science into products. The team became the first to conclude that the industry was facing an "innovation deficit," which they predicted would be filled with products from the biotechnology industry.
1997: A paper on genomics and its impact on drug discovery and development. The paper presented for the first time the conclusion that existing drugs work through no more than 500 targets in the human body, in contrast to an estimated 3'000 to 10'000 potential drug targets identifiable through genomics.
While at Roche, Dr. Ryser maintained the scientific liaison between Roche and Genentech, and represented Roche on a joint steering committee with Millennium Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Ryser served as a member of EuropaBio and was an advisor to the German government in a major initiative to fund biotechnology start-ups. Dr. Ryser holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Basel, Switzerland.
BSHI portfolio: Dr. Ryser currently serves on the board of directors of ToleRx, Inc..
