Jurgen Drews, M.D.
Jurgen Drews joined Bear Stearns from IBMP, a $70 million biotech venture fund, where he was co-founder and Chairman of the Board. From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Drews was President of Global Research and Development and a member of the Executive Committee at Hoffmann-La Roche. From 1970 to 1978 he was Head of Microbiology at the Sandoz Research Institute in Vienna. Between 1979 and 1982 he was Managing Director of this institute. He and Dr. Ryser co-authored several watershed articles on productivity in the pharmaceutical industry described on the following page.
Dr. Drews is the author of the 1999 book "In Quest of Tomorrow's Medicines." He serves on the board of several leading biotech companies and is past President of the Brussels-based Senior Advisory Group on Biotechnology (later named EuropaBio). Dr. Drews is a professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and a professor of Molecular Genetics at The University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Brunswick, NJ. Between 1998 and 2000 he also consulted for Orbimed Advisors LLC, a New York company managing health care funds. Dr. Drews received his M.D. degree from the Free University of Berlin and did postdoctoral work at the University of Frankfurt and Yale University.
